B.Sc. Geology or Bachelor of Science in Geology is an undergraduate Geology course. Geology is a branch science that comprises the study of the solid Earth and the processes by which it is shaped and transformed. Geology provides primary evidence for plate tectonics, the history of life and evolution, and past climates. In modern times, Geology is commercially important for mineral and hydrocarbon exploration and for evaluating water resources; it is publicly important for the prediction and understanding of natural hazards, the remediation of environmental problems, and for providing insights into past climate changes; it plays an essential role in Geotechnical Engineering; and is a major academic discipline.
M. Sc. Geology or Master of Science in Geology is a postgraduate degree program. It is a two year program that deals with the scientific study of the workings and design of the earth and its layers. The basic eligibility for this course is a Bachelor's degree in science. This course deals with the detailed study of the various layers of the earth, the tectonic plates and the history of the evolution of the surface of the earth. The Curriculum of M.Sc. Geology develops a student with the necessary skills and practical knowledge which help them understand the different processes related to the earth, like the minerals, sedimentation, the climatic conditions affecting the evolution of life and aspects related to them. The major career options after this course are in the fields of environment, petroleum, mining and the oil industry. Since this course also offers courses related to engineering, the field of engineering is also open for students with M. Sc. Geology.
Among the two colleges under Mahatma Gandhi University which offer the postgraduate course in Geology, this institution occupies the predominant position. It is also responsible for the training of students to attain Graduate and Postgraduate degrees in all the facets of earth sciences. The Department of Geology in the college has been looking for a space to arrange the valuable geological objects that have been collected in these years. The department has a rich collection of rock specimens and fossils from different countries. A well-equipped lab for proper preservation of such items will be an asset for future students and research scholars.
How is Geology Course Beneficial?
1. As Earth Sciences are a much sought after discipline now-a-days, Geologists are highly in demand in Industries, mining and exploration works.
2. Apart from this, applicants can become part of various researches related to environment and Marine surroundings.
3. The teaching line is also an option with them which is all the way available for the graduates with B.Sc. Geology degree.
4. On completing the course they are able to plan programs for exploration of sites for oil, gas, water, minerals, etc.; surveying and mapping geologically promising sites: collecting, recording and analyzing samples and data from test sites and advising on the development of reserves.
Job opportunities in Geology
Many Geology graduates take professions directly related to their degree. Several private companies and Government enterprises that are directly involved in activities like mineral exploration, mineral mining, mineral production, mineral extraction, oil and natural gas exploration, oil and natural gas extraction etc. hire the graduates for the exploration and production, water supply, environmental engineering, and geological surveying.
